Welcome, students! I am looking forward to working with you and hope to get to know each of you in the semester ahead. In order to be successful in class, you need to know what is expected of you as well as what we will cover (see attached course outline). I have high expectations for my students with regard to behavior and work quality. Remember, you must pass English 3 to stay on track for graduation. Also, this is an elective class, meaning you chose to take a class where you are expected to do more work, work harder during class and be self-motivated to do the work. You will have no problem being successful in class if you are prepared, actively participate in class discussions, complete and turn in all your assignments and study for quizzes and tests.
The Great Gatsby, chapter 7
Tomorrow’s class discussion will focus on the confrontation between Gatsby, Tom and Daisy at the Plaza, the circumstances leading up to it, and the aftermath. Please be prepared to participate in this discussion by re-reading chapter 7 and answering the following questions with specific text details.
Why does Gatsby lose Daisy during the confrontation at the Plaza? Could he have done anything to win her? If he could have won her, why didn’t he take those steps? If not, why not?
Why does Tom insist that Daisy go home with Gatsby? What do you think this tells us about Tom’s character and his relationship with Daisy?
What indications are there at the end of the chapter that Tom and Daisy are going to stay together despite his philandering and her love for Gatsby?
What one question would you like me to answer in class about this reading?
